Located in southwest New Mexico, Deming is the county seat and the principal community in Luna County. Deming is served by I-10 as well as state highways 11 and 26.
Deming was nicknamed “New Chicago” by some locals who expected that, due to its location as a railroad hub, the city would grow to be as large as Chicago, Illinois. Although Deming never quite reached the size of that metropolis, it did rapidly grow into a major trade and shipping center for agriculture, livestock and mining operations in the region.
The Deming area is a veritable wonderland for rock and mineral enthusiasts. The presence of Rockhound State Park is a testament to that fact. Established in 1966, Rockhound State Park was the first park in the country to allow private collectors to remove up to 15 pounds of mineral specimens and semi-precious stones for personal use.
